How can make an app use WiFi and not cellular data, and how can I verify that it is?

AC Question

I'm new to Android, and smartphones for that matter. I just got a Galaxy S4 mini and I've already setup the WiFi connection in my house, but I have no idea if the apps or widgets or whatever are using WiFi or the cellular data. My provider is Consumer Cellular.

Welcome to Android Central! If you're connected to a wi-fi network (that's connected to the web), then the mobile data radio should turn off automatically. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can toggle mobile data off while you're connected to wi-fi.
