Texting to one number and getting response from a different number

[AC Question]

I work for AT&T as a wireless consultant and I had a customer come in today with an issue I had never seen before. He is using an lg Vista and when he texts his brother's phone number they get sent fine, but when he receives the reply it comes from the same number with a different area code ((891) instead of (801)). Everything looks right in his contacts and settings and there is nothing on his account that would cause the issue. I've searched the forums and found another person with a similar problem, and they just pulled the battery and the sim to fix it. I'm a little stumped here. haha

Puzzled, indeed! You said when he received the reply it comes from the same number? The "same number" you are referring to, is the customer's number? For example, if the customer's # was 801-555-1212, the reply from his brother, displays, 891-555-1212? Sorry I'm a bit confused on that part if you can help me out!

My guess, his brother is using something like Google Voice to send texts and picked the same number with a diff area code to make it easy to remember.

The customer's brother's number wan 801-555-1111 on outgoing messages, but 891-555-1111 on incoming messages.
