I'm trying to add an IMAP account to gmail on a Samsunf tab A.

I open gmail and follow the add account wizard which asks me to sign-in using my Microsoft account. I select "other" as the type of IMAP account and provide the correct incoming server, port and security option. it attempts to validate the server settings and returns an error message saying username or password is incorrect, The password section is greyed out and says that I'm logged in through Microsoft so I can't do anything about the PW and the username is correct. I called my ISP who suggested its a hardware problem which isn't likely on a week old Samsung. I'd like to bypass the Microsoft account signin and be able to type the PW directly but can't figure out a way. I have a Samsung Galaxy 6 which allows me to do that but doesn't require me to access through my Microsoft account
