Audio jack not working as it should- advice?

Hi all! New to this forum. I just got an Asus Zenfone 3 Max (ZC553KL). I have a wired selfie stick and a pair of headphones with volume up/down and pause music remote in them. These devices work perfectly in my other Android phone (an Oukitel K4000 pro, if that matters). However, the selfie stick is not even recognized by the Asus (no headphone icon pops up). With the headphones, music plays and the vol up and pause work, but you can't get the volume to go down with them. I have no idea what the issue is and Google hasn't been helpful so far. Any advice would be appreciated!!
