Help on rootingGalaxy S3 SGH-i747 running ICS 4.0.4

Hi, can someone please direct me to a reliable "how-to" or thread containing help on rootingGalaxy S3 SGH-i747 running ICS 4.0.4.

Does it matter what OS I'm running in order to do it? Most FAQs have made no mention of the version of ICS I'm running, just the phone that I'm doing it on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have research online about rooting my S3. But But all the answers kinda confuse. What does it really do for my phone if I wana root it ? And what is ROM?
