HTC Hero Sprint rooting question?

Okay so I'm really new to the whole rooting thing, but I've been wanting to do it for quite a while. I just now finally starting looking into how to do it, and I saw some stuff about how it has to be the stock 2.1. I was unaware of this, is got the most recent maintenance update a few days ago (2.32.651.2). Am I screwed or is there still a way to do this?

Can you point me in the right direction?
