why are Android OS's named things like 'Gingerbread' and 'Froyo'?

What was the inspiration behind the names for the Android OS's? Why not just use numbers instead of code names?

Desert, confection.....gingerbread! It is the sweetest OS! That is my theory....

Google has a history of having fun with a lot of things, and my only assumption is that is one of those cases. Each new iteration of Android is based off of some sort of dessert, in alphabetical order. It is rather fun, I must say.

Ahhh....then I am going to make a suggestion to the Android folks for a future OS name: Tiramisu, or....Flan!

This is not something new, alot of software releases have codenames (e.g. Windows releases are code-named after ski resorts, Blackcomb, Whistler...)
