why are Android OS's named things like 'Gingerbread' and 'Froyo'?

Google has a history of having fun with a lot of things, and my only assumption is that is one of those cases. Each new iteration of Android is based off of some sort of dessert, in alphabetical order. It is rather fun, I must say.

This is not something new, alot of software releases have codenames (e.g. Windows releases are code-named after ski resorts, Blackcomb, Whistler...)
