Instead of buying a new screen. If I find a cheap one on eBay that doesn't work for whatever reason can I take the screen off and put it on my RAZR hd

In theory, yes... But the disassembly process is so tedious and delicate that you might damage something just by trying to remove it.

Might? Almost definitely will. You don't care if you damage the bad one when you're replacing it with a new one, and you almost always do. In this case, you'll be heating the good one up to just below the point of damage - a few degrees too hot and it's gone, a few degrees too cool and it'll break when you try to remove it..

And you're supporting crime. ("Bad ESN" usually means "stolen phone".)
