Decimated phone need important files!!!

Ok, I have a Keyocera Hydro vibe that I decimated last Friday. I got a new phone so my sms are now being sent to that buuut my old phone still has some sms messages and contacts that are really important to me...
I tried plugging it into my laptop and it makes the connecting sound but won't say it's plugged in. Yes, I did USB debug it if that's any help.
Please, please help me. I'm frustrated and crying my eyes out.

Welcome to Android Central! If the phone is completely dead, you'll have a very difficult time retrieving the saved SMS messages--you'd probably have to bring it to a forensic data recovery service, which will likely cost several hundred dollars. The same goes for your contacts, unless you had saved those contacts to your Google account instead of the local Phone account. In general, you should always associate your contacts with your Google account, because they get immediately synced to your Google Contacts in the cloud, and therefore keep them safe from mishaps like this.
