How come I see at times the 3g signal on but never 2g

ive seen the 3g light up and at times with 1 br or no signal and most of the time it doesnt switch over to 2g or edge ect is this normal

Yup. It's because where you are at. Better look for hot spot.

I'm not sure these phones even display the 1xRTT signal (think that's what you mean by 2g). I know the Epic just says 3G all of the time, even if it is only on a 1x connection. The Nexus S 4G displays switches between 3G and 1x as it should (phone calles, sms, etc.). I've never seen a 1x symbol in the taskbar of the Evo 3D, so it may be like the Epic where the manufacturer decided we just didn't need that bit of info (to go along with notification lights that turn off after 5 min and other great HTC decisions ).

Download Mobile Signal Widget. That will tell you if your on 1xRTT or EVDO.

By the way EDGE is a GSM protocol. Not CDMA. Sprint is CDMA.

1xRTT is voice and extremely slow data. EVDO is high speed data.
