Yes, there are free apps for non-rooted phone but they come with limitations like not being able to access https pages. If you don't need to access https then you will be GTG. If you need to access those pages you can pay $10 or $20 for the app (prices vary from app to app) and have full access to everything.

PDANet is one that is good but it has a 30 day trial and then you have to pay. Easy Tether Light or something like that is another but it has the https limitation for the free version.

Neither app allows wireless hotspot functionality. You have to connect via USB. PDANet supports Bluetooth tethering, but that's not the same thing. Easy Tether didn't have that when I checked last time, but they may have it now.

we all have the unlimited everything plan. it's the only package next to having the family plan.

you have to pay if you want the mobile hotspot.

i used Z4root v 1.3 on both of my phones. temp root works like a charm.

Can you do a step by step on how you are able to z4root and then wifi-tether?

I've got z4root.1.3.0.apk and wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk.

I set usb debugging on.

Startup z4root and get message Temp Root applied you are rooted til next reboot.

Start up wireless tether and get message
Sorry but your kernal does not have all necessary features for running this application.

by the way I also downloaded the free titanium backup and thru the help option downloaded busybox.

I dont believe the stock HTC kernel will support FreeTether. And if I'm not mistaken the hotspot app in most of the custom roms is hacked so it works.

If this is true, why have people stated that they were able to do this method?

unrevoked is what the majority use. it all depends on your flavor though.

but it works for me. this time i loaded the stock 3.7 OTA. then loaded unrevoked. where as before i've always been loading rooted roms.
