Software Update not working?

Two issues really:

1) The Software Update option is not in Settings/About. It's inside the HTC Guide application. Is this unique to Telus?? A friend's M8 on another carrier has it in About...

2) When I click on Check Now, I get "Checking..." indefinitely. There's never a response. This same friend get's "Your device is up to date" almost immediately.

It does have KitKat 4.4.4 installed, and Build number: "3.28.401.9 CL389838 release-keys".
This was purchased from Telus (Canada) in early December 2014, and is unlocked on the Rogers network now.

Rogers won't update a Telus phone. The only way to get a phone bought from one carrier and running on another carrier updated is to find a captured update file on the appropriate forum at XDA Forums and flash or install it (read the instructions in the thread you find the file in) yourself.

That's disappointing. I know f*** all about flashing OS's. I kinda hoped the Software Update came from HTC.
Frustrating.
