Cracked Motherboard for HTC ONE S

Recently, I accidentally dropped some weight on my HTC One S. The screen/frame was cracked, and apparently the repair shop owner said that the motherboard was also cracked. The phone does not charge or become recognized when connected to a PC. I asked him if there was any possible way to retrieve all the files from the phone, such as contacts, text-logs, pictures,notes, and such. He said there was a risky way, of buying a new mother board and switching the micro-chips from the cracked MB to the new MB and rebooting the phone.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this process? Or any other way to retrieve the files/information from the damaged phone?
