what legitimate defense does HTC have for putting MicroSD card slot in the One for just one country?

I love that you seem to think of yourself as some sort of fly on the wall privy to the negotiations that have gone on between companies. You state all that as fact, yet you could not possibly know all that. Talk about something to laugh at! As for needs, just because you do not have additional storage needs, does not mean that others do not. The option should be there.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to NOT want an SD card. I, for one, prefer to not have one. Android doesn't support it. I'm glad HTC stuck with JUST internal storage.

What do you mean Android doesn't support it? You mean Google discouraging it? I don't know that I consider that a legitimate reason but I would love to hear what other ones that you think there are. As for Google, I don't know why that should be a concern to an end user who needs more storage. It's not like companies cannot still make devices with microSD cards in them. Including last year's best selling Android device. With that many sold, and the Note having one, and this year's S4, that's a WHOLE lot of devices. So your comment is puzzling. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for wanting more storage too. For us people on Sprint, cloud storage for movies, photos, music, whatever isn't a very good option as their network is very poor. I am hoping the switch to LTE fixes that issue, but that's going to take years to build out so who knows what things will end up looking like. In the here and now though, streaming things is NOT an option. Been there, tried it, didn't work. So that means either liimiting myself to a small subset of my collection, or use a device with additional storage. It really makes a difference.

Additionally, not all people in the world have unlimited data plans. So for those people, local storage is incredibly important. I honestly do not know why you would want to purposely limit your storage options. There could have been a nice little spring loaded slot which wouldn't have ruined the look at all. Instead we get limitations. Why?

I for one am glad that we have a usable amount of memory and don't need the SD slot. Removable cards aren't as reliable as built in storage. I had the SD card in my Note corrupt about 3 days before I got rid of it for the One, and if I hadn't had auto-upload to Google+ enabled, I'd have lost all the pictures I had taken at my daughter's 1st birthday party that was the day before the card corrupted.

SD cards in phones were a great way to keep costs down in 07 and 08 when Flash memory was still much more expensive. Phones could be more affordable and if people wanted more memory they could add it. In 2013 they don't make as much sense. They are less reliable, run apps poorly, can't be written to as quickly, corrupt more easily, and just generally make the experience of a phone less enjoyable. Are they still useful to some people? Yes. But they are a pain even if you find them useful. If you want an SD slot buy a Galaxy S4.

It's part of the Google spec and there's a 64gb model available if you need big storage. Having one would compromise the design aesthetic.

HTC obviously made a serious effort to stick to Google's specs, which is a good thing. There may be growing pains because of it, but if Google does what Apple would and make these specs some hard and fast rules that painful transition period would be minimized.

If you seriously need an SD card, this this isn't your phone.

Considering how wonky SDcards can get, so much so that Google itself says no bueno, I can't understand the obsession of wanting them.

In Android land, we have Nexii. Such devices are reference phones for manufacturers and developers. They implement Android how Google sees it. Manufacturers will skin Android, hence Sense and TouchWiz. Sometimes the manufacturers ignore Google. Sometimes they don't. The Galaxy Nexus, released in late 2011, does not have a micoSD. The Nexus S, released before that, does not have one either (IIRC). The Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 also do not have one. Google doesn't care for it. Google thinks it hurts the software and consumer in the long run.

Thus, microSDs are being phased out of Android.

The only time my sd card was removed from my last phone was when I dropped it and everything went flying. People for the most part just don't care about this "feature."

Also on top of reliability and design, I don't have to wait on my phone to "scan external media" when it boots.

The FAT32 file system required for SD card use isn't part of Android. Any company that includes and SD card also has to make significant changes to the framework to support the additional file system.

Ask anybody that had a Galaxy S3 inexplicably stop working how they feel about SD cards. They were the cause of many bricked phones.

Yup. A year from now there should be no devices with them.

What if I want an SD slot AND a metal device AND nice front facing stereo speakers AND excellent nighttime camera performance?

The 64gb storage is (currently at least) ONLY available on AT&T. I shouldn't have to change carriers in order to get more storage space. And saying that an sdcard slot would compromise design is as silly as saying that the holes for the headphone jack and power compromise the design.

The unlocked DE is 64gb.

Not silly at all. Have you seen the pics of the One with the SD slot? Kiss unibody goodbye.

Again, if you need SD then this isn't your phone. Move along.

Is your Porn collection really that big?

I'm willing to admit that I have a porn collection. (what healthy, heterosexual male doesn't?) :)

However, I NEVER put any of that on my smartphones. Not even a pictures of a full-dressed hot woman. I use my phone for work on the road 99% of the time.
Most of the time, I'm in areas with no cellular data connection.(yes, even Verizon can't reach everywhere :( ) How am I supposed to access the cloud servers
to access my files. My company is too cheap to get me a satellite phone with internet connection. :D

Well, it's interestating that Android as the open platform is getting closed. More and more restrictions, problems with SD Cards and filesystems.

On the other hand WP8 the closed platform is opening. SD slots cards with no problem whatsover with filesystems...

Can you install apps on WP8 phones that have SD slots?

1) You DO realize that that unlocked DE still can't be used on just any carrier, right?

2) Don't tell me what to do. I don't work for you, you are not my boss, so no..you don't get to tell me to "move along". I will continue to ask and ask and push and push for the device I want. (no device at present meets my needs really). And I will continue to question people's assumptions on things and people like me will continue pushing compaines to make better devices which will benefit everyone. Whether you like that or not.

Perhaps you meant to say that google can't push as many ads on you if you dont use the cloud more often.

Relax, tough guy. You're not pushing any OEM to sacrifice the build quality of their devices or their billion dollar partnerships just to make your dream device. If you still need a micro sd card in your phone, get the SGS4. Nobody's mocking you for that. We are questioning your grasp on reality if you think you're ever going to get everything you want. Nobody gets that. Everyone has to compromise on everything everyday. When you're older, you'll understand that.

I thought the reasons why Google is dropping SD card support are:

1. Cutting Licensing Costs.
2. Eliminating file system confusion where apps and downloads are being placed on the card when they shouldn't be.
3. Differences in both speed and quality of SD cards varies too greatly, they can corrupt as others have mentioned and can adversely affect the user experience if the transfer rate is too slow.
4. Trying to shift more users into storing data online through streaming services ( A good thing for most people that tend to neglect backups)

I think in general it will be a good thing for the average user because it's going to push manufacturers to include more flash memory in their phones, it removes file location issues that can confuse the average user and it lowers the cases of software and hardware issues caused by defective or slow cards.

Ultimately it should result in a better Android experience for everybody, and for those that still need an sd card slot they can always pick up a usb dongle like the one being developed on kickstarter.

Guess your a little behind. If you buy the one from HTC it'll run you about $575 you get updates from HTC not the carrier you get no bloat and it is usable on tmo and att lte network. The only android manufacturer to get around att lock on att not even Google was able to do it. So if I was on either GSM carrier this would b the only route I would go to buy this phone.

Wait so what currently released phone can I use on every carrier right now?
