Stock unbranded US HTC One and I've only noticed my WiFi doesn't want to stay connected at home, otherwise everything else is working fantastic.

It's been pretty common due to imessage. It honestly looks like you are doing everything right. Some of it will be also that your profile to other devices is still an iMessage profile, so you need to try and get the message to those you text with to make sure they switch it to SMS when messaging...

I would also say to check out the HTC blog, they post tips and tricks on the most basic of features on our phone you may not know about.

Scour the forums for must have Android apps, there are many many threads. For the One specific, it seems most like to replace the MMS/SMS app and Textra is getting a lot of love. For custom icons you do not need root and you can do it for free in most cases. You can get a 3rd party launcher...

Should also mention there is a free version of all these services you can play with at your computer/laptop. Find out which ones have the features you like as well as the music catalog. They tend to only cost something if you want to be able to use them on mobile devices or sync features.
