help w/ rooting a wiped out esteem

My esteem was totally wiped out of all programming. can not get to any screens except (reeboot, apply update, wipe data, wipe cache,install zip, back up and restore, mounts and storage, advance, power off) tried rooting programs but can not get to the screen they call for. Any help would be really appreciated!!!
