Several companies have tried hinged dual-screen phones that were supposed to make a unified larger screen, and it never worked well. Even if there wasn't some kind of border between the two screens, there would still be a seam that would be distracting for many people. Also, there's just that much more to go wrong from a hardware standpoint.

I'm betting on flexible OLED screens to bring about truly compact phones that can unfold a single screen. But that's probably still a couple of years into the future.
