overclocking...necessary on the X?

Have you overclocked before? There are risks involved, but I might suggest you look into undervolting, instead. The performance gains on the X are somewhat modest, as the it has only been stably overclocked to 1.15 gHz. It has been suggested that this is due to memory bottlenecking, but I don't know enough to comment much on that. As for the temperature, I have been overclocking/undervolting for a while now, and my temp on idle hovers at 29C and under load at 34C. That is far below stock, but this was only due to the undervolting I was doing.
Point of story, unless you know more, I would stay away for overclocking. Undervolting is what you should look into. Oh, and it only works for 2.1.
