Is phone rooted?

I followed all of the instructions. How do I know for sure if the phone is rooted?

download Terminal Emulator, and type in "su" (without the quotation marks) and press "enter"
if you're rooted a "#" sign should appear on the next line

Out of curiosity why did you root your phone? You should know as soon as you try to flash a ROM or recovery you should know

I think some of the older rooting methods gives temporary root, and after a reboot, it's unrooted again. Gingerbreak has permanent root if it's successful.
