Samsung is useless at getting this major issue resolved. I keep getting a message "outlook is not my default mail client" and I can not sync.

Love the phone, but without being able to use it for my job, its virtually useless.

Thanks for the input in advance.

P.S. android 4.3 Note 3 with Kies 3 (latest version) Outlook 2010

Re: Kies 3 and Outlook, can anyone sync with Kies 3

Hello there,
I've spent too many hours this afternoon pulling my hair out over this (getting Outlook 2007 calendar to copy across to S Planner on a Galaxy S3).
It used to work fine with Kies 2.6 and Ice Cream Sandwich Android (4.1.2?). Since the Samsung Android update to Jelly Bean 4.3. and the forced change to Kies 3.2, it stopped working. I have however found a workaround of sorts, though it may not work for all. Just a little summary:

Kies 2.6 + Outlook 2007 (Windows 7 PC) + Galaxy S3 MINI (partner's phone) -- this worked

Kies 3.2 + Outlook 2007 (Windows 7 PC) + Galaxy S3 (didn't work -- got a message saying "Cannot retrieve information for Outlook folder".
(If Samsung PC software wasn't such utter CRAP, it would allow you to specify the path to where the Outlook folder is located on the PC, but no.)

This is how I got to copy the Outlook calendar to the Galaxy S3:
  • On Outlook 2007: Right-click on "My Calendar"; >> Save As ... >> More Options
  • -- Set the date range to copy and "Detail" to "Full Details" (rather than "Availability Only").
  • Save this file ("My Calendar.ics") to a memory stick or send to oneself as an email attachment.
(The following may not be of use to people who don't have the software, but it *did* work -- after hours of trying to sync my partner's phone calendar to Samsung Account using my Samsung login, then syncing -- which didn't work. I really did not want to involve Google in any of this so kept looking for ways around it).
  • Open Outlook 2010 on a different computer
  • Open the "My Calendar.ics" file in Outlook 2010 and import that into the existing "My Calendar" on there
  • Run Kies 3.2 on that computer
  • Click Sync> Sync Calendar with Outlook
The appointments copied successfully from Outlook 2010 to S Planner on the Galaxy S3!

I only do a sync like this every four weeks for myself and my partner (whose work pattern has absolutely no pattern and varies wildly from month to month, and which I like to copy to my phone).

For users who have more regular calendar syncing needs, I also came across the following advice (and what actually does sound like a solution) during my unplanned afternoon of research:

There is a means of connecting from your Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 to an online Hotmail or Outlook.com account calendar, which you can then synchronise with your Samsung S Planner using "Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector". Someone has provided a very helpful video (below) and while you're still having to upload your calendar via the internet by using Hotmail (rather than plugging in a USB cable), for some possibly misguided reason I don't mind keeping this in-house with Microsoft rather than involving Google (which I've found horribly invasive in the month or so I've had this phone).

Very helpful video showing how to use this to sync from Outlook to S Planner on a Samsung phone. You can give Kies the old heave-ho.

I realise this is rambling and may not be helpful to everyone who has this maddening problem, but after spending the whole afternoon pulling my hair out, I may at least save at least one person a wild goose chase! :)

Someone has posted a solution here ... it has worked on my PC running Outlook 2007. It involves copying the Outlook account to a different folder which then allows Kies 3.2 to "see" it! I don't use Outlook for email thankfully -- only just for calendar -- so it may mess things up somewhat if you use Outlook for email.

Re: Kies 3 and Outlook, can anyone sync with Kies 3

Thank you for your research and sharing it. I tried to use your links, but they both took me to the same page at Microsoft help center and there was no video. I am able to sync my 2007 Outlook calendar, however, Samsung removed the option of a date range, so it duplicates all of my recurring event entries etc. and I end up with a calendar full of appointments/events listed 2 and 3 times. Why would they remove the date range option????

Re: Kies 3 and Outlook, can anyone sync with Kies 3

I've been successfully using MyPhoneExplorer for a long time to sync my Business Calendar Pro with Outlook 2007.

Re: Kies 3 and Outlook, can anyone sync with Kies 3

Thanks Simon (and olsensl).
-- Simon, does MyPhoneExplorer allow you to select date ranges and direction for the the sync to Outlook?

-- Olsensl -- Yes, I had that issue with the duplicated entries when I tried doing a test sync directly from Outlook 2007 (after I had done it successfully from the other computer running 2010). I may well try MyPhoneExplorer (or possibly splash out for Akruto Sync For Android and Windows Phone - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com and ask Samsung to pay for it) if you can specify the date ranges.
A possible way around this using Kies (if slightly cumbersome) would be to save a copy of your Outlook calendar (right click on My Calendar, Save As) and save it with specific date ranges. You could then name this something distinctive and open it again in Outlook. When syncing in Kies 3.2 select the second of the two calendar update options and then select the copy of the calendar just created for the purpose of updating a specific range. Then delete this copy from Outlook once the sync has taken place successfully. This is what I'll try next time. I must say, it IS a major pain also that you can't select which direction to do the syncing.

Otherwise I've corrected the link in the posting above for the YouTube video. I'm not all that keen on syncing via the cloud when it should be perfectly possible to do it via a USB, but I have marginally fewer problems doing this using Microsoft/Hotmail/Outlook.com than I do with Google (who almost wants to know what brand and colour toilet paper I use, how often, and how many sheets at a time).

Awsome! Thanks very much, the video REALLY helped as well.

Now my calendars works amazing.

Not sure with my contacts, but they are not working yet (Somehow I have contacts on my phone, but I think that was from Samsung link, which does nothing now...)

Tried syncing and backing up my contacts with Kies more than a dozen times.... Each time the software just crashes. My computer is not old!

What computer are you running? I can't even get the sync to start. Just that error message "outlook is not your default mail client"

Some good news, a way around the issue with the horrible Kies 3, if you have iCloud, add iCloud to the contacts accounts section (new to me, with android you have to set up email, calendar and contacts separately)

Tried many times, nothing worked, found this video, in 2 minutes now I have all my contacts synced! (only one way sync, but better than nothing!)
