My wife has the note3 and had the auto update software checked. only yesterday did she notice that the screen was unresponsive and she can only use the phone by using the s pen. what was weird was that when she closed the scover, the finger touches still didn't work from the scover...but the spen was able to function with the scover. my wife informed me that there was an update to the play store and the Samsung apps.... with luck I went to the Application manager and clicked on Google play store services and chose the uninstall updates which restored this service to the factory default. I restated the phone and bam the touch screen was working again.
I was going to go through anything related to play store or Samsung apps and have the updates removed from them but the Google play services did the trick from the first time.
now I turned off the auto update checkbox and I keep getting an error message saying that I need to update the Google play services....which I will not do for the time being.... hoping that Samsung will fix it somehow....
just wanted to post my success story for the future problem seekers.

Eventually this has occurred for the second time and Samsung installed a firmware update which I thought was odd. Then this week The third time happened and they say a software fix is not possible and they blame some scratches on the cover of the phone that is the reason of the hardware failure.
Samsung is not trying to understand that I have been complaining from the same issue for three times and suddenly they have realized that I have a hardware problem and blaming it on me.
My advice, if you face this issue, don't let anyone tell you better, and request that the hardware be changed. Do not accept a software fix as a compromise because as soon as you have one single scratch on that phone, they will not compromise and will not fix you phone, they will simply make you pay for a complete screen replacement.
Samsung service sucks and I will never buy another Samsung phone again.
