ringtone help!

I recently got a Note 4 and I am wanting to make a song a ringtone. I've downloaded numerous apps and cut the song to my liking. I save the clip as a ringtone and then it asks if I wanna make it my default and i do but when people call you can't hear anything. I go to my sound setting and select the ringtone again and it doesn't have a sound. I have no idea what's wrong!

First, use Ringtone Maker on the phone or Audacity on a computer. I've made ringtones with both of them and they all work.

Second, play the ringtone from a file manager - just find the file and tap it. If it plays, it could be the wrong filetype for a ringtone. mp3 files definitely work.
