Default the currently connected phone does not support text messaging via bluetooth

I have a captivate with ATT and recently sync'd with my 2011 Ford Edge. One of the features of the MY Touch and Ford Sync is that you can have your text messages displayed and even read (text to voice) on the Sync/My Touch system. Unfortunately, I get this message "the currently connected phone does not support text messaging via bluetooth". Is there some kind of app or upgrade I can get to have this ability?

I just bought a 2011 Ford Edge and I have the same concern. From what I have read, the ability to send text messages to the car is through the Bluetooth capabilities. If your Bluetooth phone is not Bluetooth text enabled, then it will never work. Check out some of the new release Motorola smartphones and look at the Bluetooth capabilities and you will see what I'm talking about.

I think your phone must have bluetooth with MAP protocol for this to work.

I just bought a high-end Motorola bluetooth that claimed to have text-to-voice and voice-to-test (for hands-free replies to texts) via the MotoSpeak app, but ... now discover that capability is only available with Froyo 2.2 ... and y'all know how hard it can be to get that upgrade (I have a Mac so i have to 'borrow' a PC to upgrade, and all my available PCs are 64-bit, but the upgrade only works with old-school 32-bit PCs).

There are ways, if you do not mind going unofficial. Check out the custom ROM subforum, if you want to go that route. You can setup a ubuntu virtual machine on OS X, use Heimdall to load not only 2.2, but 2.3 if you wanted to.

Or, if you were to just root your device, you could get ROM Manager going and install Cyanogenmod 7, which is 2.3.5. You could probably do this without a computer at all, excepting backing up files, which can be done with OS X easy enough.

Either option of course, is a custom ROM, and does carry the possibility of downtime, especially for first timers. If interested, poke around in the sub forum and we can give you a hand.

the MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch systems with Sync on Ford vehicles is just basically a universal remote for your phone. If the phone does not support text messages via bluetooth, it will not work, even if it is a higher end phone.

Best is to look at the Sync compatible phone list on syncmyride.com to see what phones would work with this feature.

If you have any questions concerning MyFord Touch or Sync Entertainment System in your Ford & Lincoln vehicles, feel free to send me an email as I sell Ford & Lincolns and am the Sync Tech Specialist for my dealer group.

This worked for me and my Epic Touch (Galaxy S2):

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and had the same trouble with it not receiving text messages. Here's how to fix it. You must do this in this order for it to work. You must have your phone paired with SYNC before doing this.

1, In SYNC, got to SYSTEM SETTINGS, ADVANCED, MAP PROFILE. Set MAP PROFILE to ON

    2. In the PHONE SETTINGS Menu in SYNC, go to MESSAGE NOTIFICATION. Set to ON

    3. Once these are done. Exit the system.

    4. Now have your phone in your hand and get someone to send you a text message. I simply used the phone and requested my data usage, which in turn gets the carrier to send you a text message. Keep watching the phone for the text message to arrive. You will see a prompt on your phone that says something like, SYNC is requesting text messages through Bluetooth. Make sure Always Allow is checked and hit OK on your phone.

    5. You can now send and receive text messages.

Cubfan - does your solution work on the new Samsung Galaxy S3?? I'm having the same issue on my Ford sync. I had no problem with my DROID2, now that I've upgraded to Samsung Galaxy S3, sync will not read text messages.....

I have a 2013 ford escape with my ford touch/sync. I connected my galaxy note 2 and the texting to voice worked, but after turning off my car and restarting it said the currently connected phone does not support texting via Bluetooth! If I disconnect and reconnect my phone the texting will work, until I turn the vehicle off and restart. Obviously the phone has the capability, but Ford says there is nothing wrong with my sync. I am not going to keep disconnecting my phone every time, any suggestions? The phones Ford suggested I get were all 3 yr old phones, and the provider said the galaxy note 2 has the same technology and should work, which it obviously does.....once! HELP???

I just bought a Lincoln MKZ with MyLincoln(Ford) Touch and I have the Galaxy S4. It didn't work at first, but then I just updated to the new Google Music app they released today and it started working!!! I am going to do more testing, but it's definitely the Android phone that is the culprit. I don't know if you still have the Galaxy S2, but it's the Bluetooth A2DP and MAP access that are the problem. The newer phones (Note 2 and S3) have Bluetooth v4, which causes issues sometimes. I'm so stoked it is finally working after a simple software update to a random software. Cheers!
