character input problem

When typing the keyboard acknowledges that I am pressing characters but no characters actually appear on the screen, text message, google search, web page, etc. This goes off and on with no real pattern as to what is causing it. The only thing that is a constant is that this only seems to occur when I am unlocking my phone. As far as I can tell all other input is fine, clicking on app, unlocking the phone, etc. I already cleared the touch input data with no success so anyones input is appreciated.
