I have Android File Transfer loaded in my Macbook applications, but, on connecting the UISB, the android phone is not recognised

Welcome to Android Central! First, try a different USB cable, in case the one you're using is faulty. If it still doesn't work, then it may be due to Android File Transfer itself, which is notoriously buggy. If you only need to copy files, try a wireless solution like AirDroid or Wi-fi File Explorer.
