thanks. Now that i have a custom recovery am i ready for custom roms?

Pretty much yeah, remember always make a nandroid before flashing something new.

Under the stickies is a thread with an index with the different roms currently available.

[Guide] Optimus S Recoveries, ROMs, Kernels, and Themes

Personally I would recommend reborn rom, shell rom is also good if you like the idea of a stripped down rom.

I installed the files to my sd card and installed Terminal Emulator to my phone. Terminal Emulator doesn't work as I get error msg which makes me force close it. Is there any other Terminal Emulator program that I can use? I'm a newbie to all this. Thanks in advance. :)

Wondering the same thing. Since my USB isn't working anymore.

Hello,

Thanks for the thread and info:

Hit a roadblock trying install custom recovery

In the adb shell, I get all the way to :
mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
and it give's me an error- 'no such file exist' . The su shell is showing #.
Recovery never installs correctly. I'm rooted with Z4root and I have
Superuser installed. The Xionia version is : xionia_cwma_12518.6

That error message is not really a problem. As said in the first post of this thread, ignore it. What happens on the next command?

The rest of the commands complete just fine, however the recovery still
doesn't work on reboot. At this point I've actually lost my stock V9 recovery
as well. The screen just goes blank when I try to reboot from shell or even
manually from the phone. It just stays their indefinitely. I can only get past it,
after I take the battery out and re-start. It's probably screwed'

Anyway thanks for the reply:

Don't give up!

Well, not seeing any kind of logcat, I'd have to guess the rest of the commands really did not complete correctly. If you can still get into adb, I'd suggest trying again.

You are extracting the files and placing on root, as required? What version of software/baseband are you currently running?

No way would I give up, probably screwed is code for just
beginning to have fun. Anyway I restarted the phone a
couple more times and then I went back to the shell.

I started the entire process fresh. Started with a new
upload and everything. Guess what ? I now have Xionia
cwma 12518.6 installed and working. Probably screwed
lasted about 20 minutes. Not bad: I'm totally stoked !

I'm running V9 for now and I'm planning to install a custom
rom, though I'm undecided at this point on what rom to
choose. Either way I will have to install VC or go up to VD.
The custom recovery will help tremendously I'm sure.

Thanks for the advice

Excellent! Suggest you go VZD SW/BB and, IMHO, the best custom ROM for someone new is Reborn. Then you can get into further modding of that and who knows from there!

Everything installed like clockwork. I took your advice
and installed VZD and went with Reborn and it's an
awesome first experience at modding an android
phone like the Optimus S. I was even able to restore
some the old apps with included data; by batch uploading
directly from Titanium Back-up.

I think once I get completely settled into this whole new
system, I will of course continue to tweak it and make it
better and more efficient. I also noticed that the the]
overclock widget went all the way up to 800 mhz !
Mind boggling, anyway just a word of advice to
anyone reading these posts. If your using any of these
incredible tools to mod your phones, how about donating
some hard cash to these awesome individuals who actually
make it possible. Gratuity is in high order.

Thanks O.a.T

Check your inbox ... You must type SU before anything, then SuperUser will ask for permission. Also, don't make the same mistake I did, don't put the .zip on your SD card ... You have to extract the .img to your SD card. If you have any questions email me or PM me. Blake.Hasen@GMail.com

Good luck man!

I have installed Xionia CWMA and also installed a custom ROM (rebornRom2.1)

1. Can I switch between ROM's saved to my SD if I want?
And if so, I am guessing I need to make a nandroid backup of my current one first right?

Thanks, new to all this :-\

Yes you can switch. And yes make nandroid. They are your best friend. Read instructions for each Rom install though. For some like CM7 roms you must follow them exactly to avoid issues.

Welcome and have fun.

Hey Everyone,

I'm brand-new to the world of Android in general, not to mention Rooting Android...so please bear with me.

A few questions:

I *think* I followed all of the steps correctly...again I *think*.

After the last string of commands in the adb shell, the phone rebooted...

When it came back up, I saw a screen that looks very similar to the Xionia CWMA v1.2518 Screenshot at the start of this thread.

The only difference is that mine only showed the following options:

- reboot system now

- apply sd card:update.zip

- wipe data/factory reset

- wipe cache partition

- install zip from sd card

...and that's it. I am missing the rest of that first column...

- backup and restore

- mounts and storage

- advanced

Any ideas as to what I did wrong?

How can I double-check to make sure that I did everything correctly?

I know I need to read up on tons of stuff...so thank you so much in advance for your patience.

Just curious, what on earth is a 'Nandroid'? Also, can I have both CM7 and Reborn on my SD Card...and choose what ROM to boot into? Does anyone know of there is some sort of BootMGR in existence for this?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

BJ

Had that problem, that's not Xionia you got. You must extract the .zip given in this guide and place the .img your SD card. Hope that helps you man!

without any other code if you were to connect your cell, and have adb running, you can tell your cell to reboot into recovery. You are still in the STOCK recovery.

Like Blake has mentioned. Make sure you unzip the files to the ROOT of your SD card, then do it again.

Good Luck!

Ok, I will try again. Right now, I have the following files on the root of my SD Card:

1. - flash_image (No Extension)

2. - xionia_cwma_12518.6.img

Should I add '.img' to the 'flash_image' file?

Also, once I do this...If I do the Volume Down+Home+Power...will that boot into Xionia??

One more thing: What is the difference between using something like 'Xionia' vs. 'ROMManager (ClockworkMod)??

Thank you all so very much!!!
