My first Android phone was an HTC Evo. It was my phone for the duration of my contract, then it was my media device for a year. In it's 4th year it became my daughter's phone after her phone broke prior to upgrade eligibility. In all that Evo went through a lot and even though it was on it's third battery the phone was in daily use for nearly 4 years.
It's not just my Evo either. My 6 year old son has a Motorola Photon for watching videos and playing mine-craft. That device has no plan so I guess it is not a phone anymore but it is at least the second life of that device and it is on it's second battery.
It is the many lives these devices live that is why a removable battery is a must-have feature. Sure one doesn't need to swap out the battery mid day anymore, but that does not mean the ability to swap out a battery has lost value.
