Ok I'm new to Android but in the last four days I have read so much I dream Android. I have an issue with a few things and don't know where to turn. My EVO is:
Android 2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.15
Build 3.29.651.5

Bought this thing like 5 days ago and tried to root it(without knowing as much as I should) and was stuck in recovery screen (green txt) so I took it back to Sprint. They laughed but fixed it. Now My phone says its S-Off (hboot 2.02.0000)
and for the life of me I can not get PC (windozeXP 32bit) to install the drivers and until I get that done right I am afraid to try and root this thing again. When I try to install the driver it says there was a problem loading. From everything I've read it can be rooted but the people at Sprint said it will always get stuck in the recovery screen if I try. Which is truth and how do I get the root process done (safely) so my woman doesn't nag me for trying this again?

To be sure if you have root it to down load from the Market Terminal Emulator. After installing it open it up you will see $ type su and it should turn to # if it doesnt you will need to find the posts on rooting hboot 2.02

Sorry to say, but it sorta sounds like you may have soft-bricked the USB port. Check your SD card...Go to something like your gallery and see if it tells you anything about not recognizing your SD card.

Ok got emulator and it says permission denied even though S-off. Things like SuperUser and Titanium Backup wont work and SD card reads just fine. I've read the hroot 2.02 many times now and because I can't get drivers to work on my PC I'm kind of afraid to try root again until I can get them working. any suggestions? Or can I just do it without having the drivers? Really wish I would have read much more before my 1st attempt. Maybe I should try to turn S-on and start from scratch...

Fix ur USB issue with this

[ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working - xda-developers

Get to me once it connects

Load a Root Rom like MYN on the SDCard and Rename it PC36IMG

Load into Bootloader let it do its thing

Once its loaded ull have a Root Rom but ull need to Flash a Recovery

Use Rom Manager to Do this...

Since you have S-OFF you should be good following what I just Said

Since my hboot says S-off can't I just connect phone as disk drive and transfer PC36IMG.zip to SDcard and unplug it then reboot into hboot and load the .zip, bypassing anything to do with the PC? If I try will I brick my phone or cause other issues? I get the feeling it is rooted to some extent but after taking it to Sprint I think they loaded their ROM which wouldn't be rooted so simply adding a rooted ROM should do the trick?

I'm thinking you did unrevoked forever, and sprint ran an ruu. Therefore you're s is still off. If you got a level 2 root, since your nand is already unlocked, you might be fine.

Use z4 root in the market and tell me what happens.

Oh and having your soff does not have anything to do with mounting your SD to the PC

OK ran z4root and did a temp root. Said successful and I have root until next boot. Ran Terminal Emulator and got the # when I su. So what is my next step to adding a custom ROM or deleting bloatware?

I didn't figure S-off and SDcard had anything to do with each other in this case. The part in the guide that has me using hboot USB wouldn't work due to drivers not working is all. Also thank you all for your assistance with this. Like I said I just want to make sure I don't brick it, you should of heard the things my woman said when we had to go to Sprint with a broken phone lol.

Place a Custom Rom on ur SD Card U can leave the name

download Rom manager and Flash a Custom Recovery ASAP

Make a NAND Back Up

Obviously with a reboot you will lose Root

Re Root with that App

Go into Rom Manager and Flash that Rom

Once ur all Set up again then we can talk about deleting bloat and such things

Ur far from done right now

Loaded ROM manager. Tried Flash Custom Recovery, failed. got error, tried back up Current ROM but needs clockwork so that failed. Can I still try install Custom ROM from ROM manager w/o clockwork being installed? Is that even safe. Maybe I should install ROM then do the backps and such....

I rebooted and did perma root with z4root. Now its just getting it all backed up and a custom ROM installed, or do back ups after custom ROM?

You got clockwork recovery installed and youre doing a back up?

If you cannot get rom manager to flash a custom recovery, go into the market and search for superuser the dev is chainsDD.

Install SU, then try.

And you should do a backup before, and after. Just in case.

SU is up to date in SuperUser. I try to install Flash ClockWorkMod but it fails and says there was an error. Tried to backup using ROM Manager but it needs ClockWork installed and it wont install, error installing so no way to back up unless maybe I go into hboot...just a guess. Not sure if this matters but "Check for ROM Updates" - the description says my "ROM is not set up to receiveOTA Updates. Please contact developer!"

This ClockWorkMod thing is giving me fits, think I'm ready to back up ten yards and punt! Clockwork wont install because of signature authentication but I thought S-Off means it wont check them and cause this type of problem...
