How do I make my screen smaller by pinching the screen on my Samsung S3 mini?

I have an app on my screen but i can't read all of it. everytime i pinch the screen to make it smaller the screen goes into a box with a minus sign in the right hand corner this is driving me mad HELP. I can scroll up and down but i can't move left or right so i can't read all the app.
