Thanks for this info, I followed it to the letter I believe with the following results:
The updater showed 100% complete and I waited a further 15min or so for the phone to reboot and show the LG splash screen. But all I saw was a blank screen. I unplugged the phone and attempted to to reboot through the stock recovery. I had to guess the key strokes and I do manage to get the SPrint tweet on reboot and funny enough I do receive calls but I cannot answer as the screen is blank and inactive. I ran the LG mobile tool and it says its up to date. I also tried factory reset (Guessing the key strokes comparing to another optimus I have) and still the dark screen of death!
Any ideas where to now?

I wouldn't really call this dark screen of death.

What actually happened is your phone has the newer LCD hardware which LG switched to mid-production. The older ROMs like ZV8 and ZV9 do not have the drivers for the newer LCD hardware. Thus you will notice they will boot with ZV8/ZV9 and be functional (including the touch screen), except there will be no visual feedback.

This is actually covered in a RED warning at the top of the first post.

If your purpose was to get a stock ROM with hotspot working, the last ROM that would allow that and work with your LCD is ZVC. You can get the substitutions for that in the Reference section at the bottom of the first post.

To get by the current issue of not having screen output, I suggest either you use Android Screencast (link in the first post) or do some operations "blind"

Update yourself to the ZVD full restore:
