Low volume in ear piece and caller cant hear me

[Android Central Question]

My phone randomly started having very low volume in the ear piece (yes I am sure all the volumes are turned up) and now the callers I am talking too are having a hard time hearing me and say I sound muffled. This happened in between two calls. I have not downloaded any new apps, I have done the safe mode cache clean up and made sure the mic and earpiece were not dirty. The external speaker and Bluetooth work fine. As the sound problem is on both sides of the call, I do not believe this is a hardware problem and I hope I am not the only one that has had the problem. Any and all suggestions are welcome. The phone is 1 year old.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? I would think it could still be a hardware issue, although it could also be something with the firmware. The next step might be a factory reset.
