Microphone question

Having problems with the microphone on the X. Tech support had me switch to speaker phone, and said he could hear everything fine, but real choppy with out the speaker phone on.
My question: Does using the speaker phone use a different microphone? I don't understand if it doesn't. Just wondering.

Yes it does. When on speaker, the Droid X switches to using a mic and louder speaker mounted on the back.
