Notifications /Messages - what am I missing

[Android Central Question]

I looked to see if there was an answer to this, but did not find one, hence I am posting this question:

If I receive a message from person A I will be notified with a vibration and sound. I then respond back to person A. Now if Person A again responds back within the same conversation , I DO NOT get a notification sound or vibration. Why is that ? Seems a notification is in order for any message I get.

I am using Google Pixel 4a, Android 12. I see nothing unusual in my Notifications settings e.g. App notification set to 'ON' for all messages.
The phone is NOT set to Do not disturb; Setting services is set to allow ALL notifications.

Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! Is this happening while you have the Messages app open in the foreground to that conversation? Or does this happen when you're doing something else on the phone?
