Question About App Updates

I've been reading a lot about how developers need to update their apps to work with Android Lollipop. I don't have a technical understanding of what the change is, but I understand that there has been a major change in how the OS works with the Lollipop release.

I have a tablet which I still use frequently that stopped updates at Jellybean. If I continue to allow the apps on my tablet to update, will they eventually become unusable since I don't have the newest OS? Right now I have updates turned off, and I don't know whether there is a way to tell if it is safe to continue to update or not.

Most app developers will continue to support Jelly Bean devices for some time. The app will only update to compatible versions, so that it will continue to work on your device
