I'm proficient enough when it comes to flashing rom's and doing stuff like updating the radios. What I really want to know is why do we update the radios. I mean, what does it really do? Curious...

Away from all the reachable and used partitions of memory, is the radio partition. Its filled with the necessary software and drivers to connect you to your wireless stuffs, and if you disturb this radio partition with improper files you get a permanent brick. Just don't battery pull ever and you'll be good to go. :p

Use the latest amon ra and flash it, reboot when prompted and let it sit. It'll spaz out a bit, just don't battery pull. I recommend the calkulin all in one radio update.

Benefits are better stronger signal being pulled in, and better battery life.

That about covers it for radios I think :)

Complicating things is the reality that some claim better battery with older radios, and claims that some play nicer for battery and signal with certain kernels.

Thank you for the explanation. I do update my radios frequently, but I just wanted to understand what is it that I do.
