Why can't apps access the camera on my Kindle Fire HD 8?

Hello all,

I have a new Kindle Fire HD 8 which is not rooted, I have simply installed the apk files for the Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework, Google Play Services, and the Google Play Store so I could install apps from Play instead of the (very limited) Amazon AppStore. Everything works beautifully, except I can't get some apps to recognize the camera (Snapchat, Walmart, Walmart Grocery). I get a black screen like there's no camera at all. I thought maybe it had to do with app permissions, but now I'm not sure. Anyone dealing with this? I'm not against rooting, I just wanted to try a more conservative approach first, and I'm willing to try running scripts over ADB if that's necessary. But I'm wondering if it's not just that the Fire OS is essentially the wrong Android version for running these apps. Maybe that's way off base though. Any help would be appreciated!
