Why can't I get my phone to hook up to my smart tv

It have lg access 4 g lte phone and a Samsung 3 d smart tv. I bought a Mhl adapter kit today to make the phone run through the tv, but it won't work. I tried a Samsung phone with the same results. What's wrong? It's driving me crazy. YouTube says just plug it all together and it should work.

Have you tried using a Chromecast? also try contacting the store where you bought the kit from, they might be able to assist.
