Wired earphone call volume

Today was the first day I used my Samsung wired headphones with my Note 5 during a phone call. I could not lower the volume to a comfortable level using either the control on the headphones or the volume buttons on the phone. I could adjust it up and down, just not lower it as much as I would have liked. Anybody else encountered this? Any ideas?
