Is there a way to turn off your apps, so it just shows the clock?

If you are talking about the 5 icons on the bar at the bottom (the quick shortcuts), you can remove 4 of them where just the lock shows up. Just long press and move them to a home screen or remove them altogether. However, they will not be available in the quick launch bar once you unlock the phone.

Bummer. Without the ring, I have inadvertently swiped up one of those apps a few times. I understand that you can just swipe up on the time, but your finger naturally gravitates toward swiping up the lock, but sometimes you catch one of the apps on either side of it.
