I just started the upgrade yesterday morning when I came into work. I did nothing special to my phone before starting the upgrade process. I had no problems with the upgrade. I am running pretty much stock - no root, but I do use Nova Launcher Prime. Everything is working fine.

If it were me, at the very least I'd reboot my phone to make sure no apps are running and the environment is "fresh".

If you want root, don't do it.
