How to open port 5222?

I finally got my Optimus V working with free voice calls over WiFi (VoIP) using Groove IP for outbound and Google Voice for inbound. This Android works inside my house now. But when I took it to Panera Bread company, I was not able to connect there due to the error to the effect: "Cannot connect; you must open port 5222".
How do I open this port?

Panera Bread set up their wifi to block the ports. its not your phone. least thats what it sounds like.

isnt port blocking done in the router as well as in software? they could have set it up to be an open wifi hotspot but block everything but commonly used ports

That's correct, I would suggest to talk to the admin who setup the router.
Have them forward inbound/outbound traffic with that port number to the main external IP address within the router.
Then reboot router & enjoy.
