    I forgot the APK name that did this for KitKat but I specifically remember you could install this little patch and it simply exposed the built-in battery level in the notification bar. Is there such a thing on L?

    Many different apps do that. If the phone is rooted, Xposed has a few modules to do it. GSam Battery Monitor will do it.

    I use battery widget reborn and it displays a notification of your current battery percentage. Works great too.

    Thankfully, on Lollipop, you can the percentage even before it has drained past ~40%!
