Gmail not sending notifications on Nexus 6p

So unless I open the app, Gmail does not send me push notifications for email. Occasionally it does. After I open the app it will send me any emails for a day or 2. Then maybe a day or 2 later it wont notify me of any emails i get in my Primary inbox. I have sync set to on in the settings.

Just this morning my dad forwarded me an email that did not push to my phone and I had to open the app to view it. The mails that i had received in other inboxes didnt sync as well.

Thanks for any and all help. I hope I do not have to do a reset and restore for the phone.

Did you Restrict Background Data? Go to Settings>Data Usage, and make sure that option isn't turned on. If you don't see it universally turned on, then select Gmail, and make sure it isn't individually turned on for the app.
