When I configured the lock screen with Widget Locker and NiLS, the basic controls would appear, but kinda overlay other notifications there. Inconsistently, they would function correctly or not respond at all to taps.
Unfortunately, apps don't control where or how the basic controls are displayed on the lock screen. They're a part of Android itself. Apps can only register as a lock screen controls client. This basically tells Android that the app wants it to display the controls and it should send messages back to the app (to actually pause/play and skip tracks). Android controls the positioning, layout, behavior, and appearance of the controls.
Personally, I think the basic controls are severely lacking. The buttons are very small and hard to use, and the album art is washed out. I use the mini-player on my tablet lock screen. The controls are much larger, plus you have all of the extra features in the mini-player. On my phone, I have my timeout set to 30 minutes with a pin lockout, so essentially I don't have a lock screen.
Also, they would still be there even after closing the app with the "x". Once, I had to restart the phone to clean it all up.
(Note: the basic controls have sometimes appeared even after I gave up and turned them OFF in lock screen)
I'll investigate any issues regarding the appearance of the basic controls even if the app isn't running or the controls are disabled on the Preferences screen.
