Why does Google insist on not showing app search results by number of downloads?

For example, if I search for "hourglass" in the Play Store(either on my phone or on PC), it returns 139 results. I have to go through the entire list to find what I really want. It's so much easier to just see which ones are most downloaded...

I have no idea but it dose seem they have the most popular first in most cases some times google i precise and you have to enter it in perfectly who knows

New and small app vendors would have zero chance of getting noticed if search results always showed the most popular first.

Why are you convinced the most downloaded one is best? Maybe the newest one, who's developer had a chance to look at all the older ones, is really the best. I've downloaded a lot of apps that I ended up removing, but I still get counted in the number of downloads. I think that's a lousy way to determine "best."
