How do I delete in built apps that are greyed out

After checking some forums re deleting in built apps, (following these instructions) settings, finding app, unchecking show notifications box, then disable......I cannot uncheck the box or disable as they are both greyed out ... Is there something I am not doing? Jo

Hello Jo and welcome to Android Central!

Just curious to know which apps are you trying to delete/disable? It would seem that there are some built-in apps that cannot be disabled or deleted other than if the phone was rooted.

Those are system apps and cannot be deleted. Only way to delete them is to root your phone and thus void your warranty. So it's not a path I recommend.

What about non-system apps? Evernote comes pre-loaded and I can't uninstall nor disable

If you're rooted, an app like Titanium Backup should help you remove that
