Need help on an issue with Instagram Direct Message Notifications

As the title states, for the past several days I've been having trouble with Instagram Direct Message Notifications. I tried searching for similar threads, but all I got was how to mute direct message conversations, which is not what I want to do.

I get a notification for every. single. comment. in a direct message conversation. When I open the conversation and get caught up, I then have to go and clear all of the notifications manually. If I leave my phone for a bit and the conversation is really active I will have 50+ notifications for the same direct message conversation, which then buries any other notifications in my notification panel. Even if I'm in the Direct Message conversation, and up to date on the conversation (at the bottom of the screen) and actively involved in it this happens.

I've tried:
- Restarting my Nexus 5 (stock 6.0.1 w/Feb 2016 security patch) - no change
- Logging out and back in - no change
- Clearing cache/data and signing back in - no change

I used to just get one notification for when there was new comments in a direct message conversation. I want that to happen again. I'm not looking to turn off the notifications, as I know how to mute them, I just don't want all of the duplicate/triplicate/etc notifications. Is this a change in how Instagram works? If so, why?

My Instagram is showing as version 7.17.0

Any assistance would be appreciated! :)

Re: Need help on an issue with Instagram Direct Message Notifications

This is what I end up with when there are more than 7 unread comments in the same direct message conversation, making it impossible to see if there are any legitimate new notifications for anything else:

I'm having this exact problem and this is the only relevant post when I try to Google it. Nobody else has this problem??
