Android Central Question

Hi Everyone,

I have tried transferring all data from my Samsung Note 3 (Android 5.0) to my new Moto G7 (Android 10) using my Google Account. The Apps have come across, but no personal data like personal app data, or contact info.

I have read that I need Android 6 or higher for this to work.

1. Please can someone confirm that I do need Android 6 on the old phone?
2. If so, can I get my old Note 3 up to Android 6, and how do I do that?
3. Could old data privacy settings or something like that be blocking data transfer?
4. Is there another method of transferring all data, like via SD card?

Thanks in advance for any help or pointers

Si

If you're referring to the auto backup feature that developers can enable for their apps, yes that does require Android 6 or higher. Note that not all developers enable that feature.

If Samsung never released it, any process by which you'd be upgrading the device will likely result in wiping the device.

contact info.
Are your contacts not synced to your Google account? I would (and do) save my contacts to my Google account so they're always backed up.

4. Is there another method of transferring all data, like via SD card?
Motorola used to have an app for this, is there still one available? It was called Motorola Migrate - https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS97292

Thanks @hallux, especially for taking the time to answer each of my questions. Had a login problem (totally my end and fault), but I'm finally in here now.
I was referring to the general feature which enables you to transfer all data on everything in one go from an old Android phone to a new Android phone, like mapping from one to the other. In my Android 5.0 Samsung Note 3, there is a feature called 'Back up my data' and it is described as "Back up Application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers." On my new Moto G7 Android 10 (started as 9, but I updated it when prompted) there was a first start-up feature sequence which (after logging in to my Google account) asked me if I wanted to import all my backed-up data from the Cloud, which I said yes to. It said there was 3.7 Gb of data, but when it finished the process all I had on the Moto were the apps (about 130) like I'd just downloaded them fresh off Google Play. Absolutely no data came which was personal to me - in the apps, settings, contacts or anything else. I've never done an Android old phone to new phone transfer before, so I should perhaps start with this as the initial base problem I have, and humbly ask for help like I'm very dim and know nothing.

Please can you or anyone point out what I've boobed up and what I should try?

Si
