Does a smartphone flashlight widget/app carry risk of a worm/virus?

A

AC Question

On the news today there was a short warning that flashlight apps/widgets put smart phones at risk for a worm. Wondering if that is true?

Welcome to Android Central! Depends on the flashlight app. A while ago, there was an app called "Brightest Flashlight Free" that could track user location and potentially sell that info: Android flashlight app tracks users via GPS, FTC says hold on - TechRepublic

A good flashlight app should only need permissions for the Camera, since the camera flash (that's used as the flashlight) is part of the Camera. Avoid any that have other permissions, like Network Access, Accounts, etc. Network Access is probably for ads.
