what are themes and luanchers?

After 6 years of ios, I have my new gs5 and am intrigued by Android and enjoy the idea of customizing my phone, but I don't understand the whole theme and launcher thing. Can someone explain how the whole thing works in layman's terms?

The theme is basically the set of icons (and the wallpaper, the background, sometimes). The launcher is the homescreen and app drawer - basically the desktop. You're free to change either or both without voiding any warranty or insurance. You can also change wallpapers without changing anything else. I usually have something relating to the next upcoming holidy, which reminds me that I have to get rid of the turkeys and put Android Claus back for Christmas.
